Secondary suites could be important source of affordable housing in Northumberland County

With Northumberland County’s current rental vacancy rate sitting at 0.5 per cent, legislation that permits secondary suites could be the key to creating much needed affordable housing options.

Reporting a steady interest from residents inquiring about creating secondary, or accessory, apartment units in their homes, Glenn McGlashon, the director of planning and development for the Town of Cobourg, said that, while the town’s approved Official Plan currently permits second units, the implementing zoning bylaw pertaining to them has yet to be enacted.
